Have tried a few but haven't really found the one for me. I find it a really disruptive time. Don't feel like going to work etc. Is it the same for most women? Any suggestions

Firstly I'd say to try and find out why you are suffering PMT, it isn't a necessity for women to suffer from PMT and it can be linked to other health problems – even something as simple* as hormonal imbalance. I say simple, of course it is never simple, more a common problem with a lot of remedies, simply a matter of finding something that works.

I'd also say bare in mind that menstruation is not just about your body getting rid of uterus lining, it is your body shedding itself from all it does not need including emotional, thus why you may find the more stressful the month the more stressful the period.

The most common hormone balancers are evening primrose oil, dong quai and black cohosh, both of which are easy to get a hold of in tablet form; EPO you can get from the supermarket, black cohosh and dong quai you can pick up from most health stores, you can also get these in tea form, someone at your local health store should be able to advise you on dosage for the tea. Vitex is another one that is a good all-round women's herb – in fact a good health store should also stock a good women's blend tea – what you choose in terms of herbal depends on convenience and personal tastes (I personally cannot abide the taste of herbal tea no matter how much honey I put in it or how hard I try to acquire a taste for it).

A good diet accompanied by vitamin/mineral supplements, a good B-complex would be a good one to pick up as well as calcium for moodiness, avoid the usual things like dairy and red meat if you can, limit soy as it tends to have bad effects on women's hormones, lots of vegetables and fruit, raw being best, at least a week prior to your symptoms normally start acting up – as always, lots of water is always a plus. As a side note on water, try not to take with meals as this dilutes the stomach acid making it hard for your body to digest foods as well as it should, sipping room-temperature water throughout the day is the best way to get water into your body. Basically, eat clean and fresh yummyness that is good for your body, always a plus, but remembering the PMT issue may help you better remember to eat your greens *smile*

You then have the more 'way-out' methods, as some people would refer to them, a lot of women I know have had great success with acupuncture/acupressure, and I myself although never seeing a chiropractor for menstrual problems still swear by what they can do with the body.

If all else fails then look into natural progesterone therapy (progesterone cream), or generally see what your doctor has to offer you, I'd say try improved diet and herbal treatments first and then go to your doctor to look at possible causes – normally doctor should be first port of call with health related issues, however most doctors are very undereducated about female sexual/reproductive health, at least this way you have tried things yourself so this gives you some control and some message to the doctor that you have tried yourself so really need some more in-depth help with the problem.

Good luck.
