White smoke could be a head gasket. My husband's head gasket went but his car just overheated erratically. It got worse over time.
As far as pricing we called the dealer (he had a Chevrolet) they only charged $600 and had it done in one day.
So if I were you I would get a second opinion.

All Neon, Stratus, Cirrus 4 cylinder vehicles (late 90's models) have a problem with head gaskets, they develope severe oil leaks at the back of the head. I had the same problem on the Stratus I used to own. They have a drain down port on the back of the head that sticks out past the rest of the block and the gasket leaks at that spot. Their fix was a re-designed head gasket. Good luck!

Sorry about your miss fortune. Only 38,000 miles, I would be leary of the diagnosis and get a second opinion. Don't tell the next guy what the last guy said so you won't get hosed. If it is a head gasket(which it may be) you should be able to have it fixed for less then 1300.00

if your car is running as it should and it isn't overheating then i would say you absolutely need a second opinion. i've never heard of a blown head gasket that wouldn't make the car at least run bad......seems like this guy is just trying to make a quick buck. where did you hear about this shop. it would be best to find out where all your friends take their cars for repairs. if this isn't possible you could at least check and see if they have any complaints at the better business bureau.

It sounds to me like the head gasket has failed. If you decide to get a second opinion, I suggest you consider taking the vehicle to a Dodge/Chrysler dealer service department, where they have the up-to-date diagnostic equipment and service bulletins.
Let the service manager know you are looking for a second opinion, will pay for the opinion, and will not be using that dealer to do repairs. They might be honest with you under those circumstances.

certain continually use gasket sealer so it doesnt flow once you flow to positioned it back on.only be particular you verify the appropriate gasket for leakage so as that way you could kill 2 birds with one stone. The neons are prevalent for head gasket leaks, there is meant to be a sparkling gasket out for the neon that could want to shelter it.

I would get a second opinion even if it is the head gasket, I beleive I could get it done for less than that.
