If u are using windows xp, you would go to :
control panel
user accounts
set password
when u go out.. either put pc to standby or off and it will always ask for a password when you turn it on again!
ALSO IMPORTANT...in control panel, display.. when you look where you set your screensaver, desktop picture etc.. you will see a bit that you can tick..which says within (how ever many minutes you want) please resume asking for password...this means eg if you leave your pc on .. and go to do something..automatically say within 2-5 minutes the screensaver will come on..and if someone then moves your mouse it will come back to the start up screen asking for your password.
as said above .. do not ask msn/yahoo etc to remember your passwords, if others have access to your pc.. but with the main password set that will stop anyone getting in.
do as i do, if someone else wants to use my pc, i set up a guest account. they get their own sign in page.. you can do this in user accounts, set up for other users... it's easy enuf to switch..you just goto start panel and where you see log off you will see switch users.. this gives them their own desktop! Now, if someone knows what they are doing, they would still be able to see certain things..but even for people that don't .. they can still see things you last accessed.
IMPORTANT..always clear your cookies, temp internet files and history..this can be done....control panel, internet options.. and you should do this on a regular basis...not only does it take away the history of the things you have looked at but it takes away cookies that track what you are doing and end up giving you advert popups etc .. but it always saves some space .. which builds up over time! eg with this not cleaned..if you eg typed in s*x and someone comes along and types in something beginning with S.. on your search engine it will show them that you looked up s*x!
good luck ..it's all easy enough to do .. x
PS DO NOT GO INTO BIOS IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING..THAT IS FOR PEOPLE WHO REALLY HAVE A CLUE RE PC'S AND YOU COULD POTENTIALLY F*CK UP EVERYTHING..THAT'S MY PERSONAL ADVICE AND I'M SURE OTHERS WILL AGREE.. follow my above comments and you'll be fine x

Start, settings, control panel, user account.
Or when starting up hit delete, go to Bios, set password from there, hit F10 when done, I would go on the first one myself it causes less problems.
