Wear clothes that fit you and your age. Try to go for classic lines that are always in style. Don't go in for fads and crazy colours. Don't wear too much make up or accessories.
There's a really good show that gives out tips called "What Not To Wear" on TLC (there's one on BBC too). But the show's site has some really good tips:

Find, define, and continue to refine your own style.
Clothing styles come and go, so be choosy, and only adopt the stuff that fits your own style. There is nothing as silly looking as a woman dressed like a 15 year old simply because she thinks it's stylish.
As an example, boot cut jeans are not flattering to every single woman out there. I know they certainly are not to me--I have tried on literally hundreds of pairs, and they just don't fit my shape or style, so I look ridiculous in them. So instead, I find something else that's stylish to incorporate into my wardrobe.
Build your wardrobe on solid basics. Find a color palette or group of colors that look good on you and complement your skin, hair and eyes, and make them the building blocks of your wardrobe. Then, each season, find a few stylish pieces or key accessories that you can use with your foundation pieces to keep you looking up to date.
You don't have to run out and buy new clothing every single season just to match the stuff that's in style. For instance, skirts with trumpet bottoms or gores are very popular right now. I just had a special occasion, and I looked all over for a straight black skirt instead. Why? Because a good straight black skirt is a classic that won't go out of style, and I can simply pair it with a top that is currently in style to update my wardrobe.
And never underestimate the power of accessories. You can have the proverbial little black dress and wear it for literally everything from weddings to picnics if you just pick the right accessories. The great thing about accessories is that they aren't terribly expensive either. Here's an example of what you can do with a little black dress:
--With fancy sparkly earrings and a necklace to match, black stockings and heels, you are dressed for a fancy occasion.
--With subdued jewelry and a subtle scarf, flat shoes and natural hose, it looks good at a funeral or at a wedding.
--With a cute little jacket, funky beaded jewelry, and flipflops, you can wear it to a park.
The key is picking the right dress :) And setting up a stylish wardrobe works exactly the same way.

Its about buying and wearing the perfect clothes, shoes, accessories that fit your body structure and define your character. Looking stylish is not about going along with the trends, but inventing a kind of your own. And also, to look stylish requires confidence! Even if the clothes you wear are great, but you wear them with no attitude at all, you're still a fashion victim.

Stylish isn't about what celebrities or everyone else is wearing. Stylish is a reflection of your own personal mark-who you are.
Wear what pleases you/makes you feel comfortable, and wear it with confidence.
Confidence (not to be confused with vanity) is the most attractive thing you can wear. ;)

By following/adapting latest fashions available.
Whatever you wear and show is your personal/individual style.
There is no such thing as style/stylish, because all such things are made or created by another human being, for his thrill.
Why do you want to follow, better have your own style and enjoy.

my philosophy on this subject is that you can be stylish in whatever you feel comfortable in, as long as it fits your body-type...just remember, spandex = "its a priveledge, not a right"

Wear sunglasses. They make anyone look instantly stylish.
And DON'T wear high-waisted jeans. Avoid sloppy dressing.
