Yes, copying is dishonest if you claim the writing as your own. However, there is a loophole. If you use quotation marks and give the original author credit in the paper, you may be allowed to copy the words of others. This is useful for coined phrases, invented words, important ideas, or quotes from literature or music. Just don't get carried away. If the bulk of your paper is copied, you will not get a good grade, even if you use quotes and give credit. Most teachers, publishers, editors etc. are looking for new insight,a deeper understanding, or a different angle on the material. Be creative.

Yes , copying three or more consecutive words is cheating which can lead into a grade F for your assignment.

Instructors have programs that scan student reports that can detect phrases and/or word groups very easily.

Plus,Copying doesn't teach you how to have your OWN thought on the subject.

You can at least paraphrase to some degree,but to outright copy is not cool.
