Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a diagnostic imaging technique which identify the biochemical and physiologic alterations in tissues, most common use is in oncology

PET performed with 2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) has remarkable accuracy in the detection of tumors.

FDG mimics glucouse and is transported into tumor cells, by glucose transporter protein and subsequently it is phosphorylated by an enzyme hexokinase to FDG-6-phosphate.

Because FDG-6-phosphate is not a substrate for glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, it is biochemically "trapped" within the cell.

This process of metabolic trapping in cell constitutes the basis for imaging of distribution of tracer with PET.

Since there is manifold increase in glucose metabolism in malignant tumors as compared to normal, it is easy to detect this difference in metabolism using PET by comparing the uptake ,..the more the uptake the brighter it is.

The clinical indications for PET:-
Lung cancer,Recurrent colorectal cancer,Lymphoma,Malignant melanoma,Head and Neck cancer,Breast cancer,Esophageal cancer,Brain cancer.

I hope this helps

Definition Positron emission tomography (PET) is a highly specialized imaging technique using short-lived radiolabeled substances to produce powerful images of the body's biological function. Purpose Besides being used to investigate the metabolism of normal organs, PET has also become the technique of choice to investigate various neurological diseases and disorders, including stroke, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease. Various psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and Tourette syndrome, are also imaged by PET. PET is especially useful in the context of cancer because it can detect metastatic tumors that may not be visualized by other imaging techniques. It is also being increasingly used not only as a cancer diagnostic tool, but also to help physicians design the most beneficial therapies. For example, it may be used to assess response to chemotherapy. PET imaging is very accurate in differentiating malignant from benign cell growths, and in assessing the spread of malignant tumors. PET is also used to detect recurrent brain tumors and cancers of the lung, col

You must have seen this in your plastic bottle right. Well I am not sure about the full form but I think it is a type of plastic which can be crushed easily only when it is crushed vertically.
