My mom started me on onions, green beans and peas. They were all easy and ready to pick at different times. I think the Peas were early then the beans then the onions. It's been so long ago that I don't remember for sure though. Sounds like a great idea and you should be able to get help from your local plant nursery or gardening extension. OR if you are lucky someone who lives near you will be an avid gardener and willing to talk shop.

What a wonderful idea... you know the old saying "give a man a fish and he eats once, teach a man to fish and he eats forever." Depending on where you live, the growing season might be diminishing. Days are getting shorter and a lot of vegetables require about a month or two to really get going. Perhaps an inside garden with a grow light, that way you could take advantage of the discount seeds being sold at this time of year. A good vegetable for watching to grow is bell peppers, or if you have a little space, tomatoes. Snap peas are good, but I wouldn't recommend cucumbers because they are a vine plant and will take a lot of room. Your local garden shop should have plenty of information. Good luck and have fun.

The best thing to do is go to a local greenhouse and ask which plants do the best in your climate zone.

The area where you live will have specific soil, temperature, sunlight and moisture that will be good for some plants and not for others.

If you really want to have good success your first time, try picking plants from a greenhouse that are already started a little bit instead of seeds.

That way you have results right away. I would suggest tomatoes, peas and carrots. But each have their needs. Tomatoes need plenty of sunlight, water, fertilizer, etc.

Have you looked at the Farmer's Almanac online? They have a lot of good advice for beginner gardeners.

Try zuchini squash. They need minimal care (occasional watering) and provide big results if you are looking to teach a child. Just give them lots of space!
