Sometimes people want an anonymous opinion - or a variety of anonymous opinions.
Some of the questions seem to be asked by people who have no idea where to go for answers, so I try to help.
Some questions are just for fun - movies and music for instance. I have watched movies and bought CDs based on what I've read on this board.
Sometimes we answer just because we want to, and some questions are clearly not intended to be answered seriously so a silly answer is given.
So to answer your question - altruism and fun

It depends.
Some questions I answer because I am qualified to answer them. Others I simply direct the person to more credible sources of information. However, when people ask stupid questions (and they do exist), I respond just for the sake of being a dick.
