I was thinking i should get my chin a buddy too....So I know I can't use my original cage. But is a ferret cage too big for even one?

A ferret cage is the perfect size and ideal for two chins. I have a Super Pet Deluxe Multi-Floor Ferret Cage that houses two chinchillas.
We started out with one chinchilla in the ferret cage and he loved it because there was plenty of space to run and jump, as well as room for many toys and treats to keep him happy.
After introducing the new chin (another male) by putting both cages side by side for two days, we put them together and observed them. They did wonderful together and are the best of friends. I think that you have the right idea: a large tall cage and a buddy will make your chin very happy :)

A ferret cage is perfect for a chinchilla, just be sure you get an all wire one or one with wooden shelves. Stay away from plastic shelves because if the chinchilla chews on it and ingests the plastic it won't be able to pass it and eventually it will cause a blockage. I prefer the wooden shelve cages because I have found that several of my chins will go to the top of the all wire cage and pee. That is a mess to clean up!! I have never had one pee on a wooden shelf. Quality Cage Company sells some wonderful wooden shelf cages for chinchillas. I have two and they are great! Plus you can't beat the price. http://www.qualitycage.com/chinchilla.html
Chinchillas are very social and do wonderful together, but its easier to introduce them during the first 6 months of age. After that it can take awhile to get two together. As someone said above you will need to keep them in cages side by side for awhile because if they go together too soon they could fight to the death.
If you got your first chinchilla from a pet store I don't suggest breeding it because you don't know its genetic background. But if you do decide to get a cage mate of the opposite sex the cage wires must be less than 1 x 1 inch or the babies will escape.
If you need help telling the sex of your chinchilla I have pictures on my website at: http://www.huggablepets.com/huggablepets/sexing.shtml

Chinchillas like to explore, so the cage is not too big. Our chinchilla loves to sleep in the small ferret hammock we got. We are also thinking of getting another chinchilla, because we heard they do well in pairs. Ours is very curious and gentle, and loves to sit or hop in our laps. We let ours out every day for about 4-6 hours (in an enclosed bedroom of course!)
We want to upgrade to a larger cage (probably the ferret one you are looking at with multi-levels) Just make sure it has a hidey place, a wheel, and a dust bath place.
Good luck! check out www.petfinder.com for chinchillas needing a home, that's what we are doing!

A ferret cage would be fine for one chinchilla, but don't put two in the same cage as they will probably fight. Chinchillas are solitary creatures and prefer their own space except to breed. The female will accept the male to mate but she will not allow him to stay with her when she is pregant which is for about 4 months, then she will be feeding the babies for 12 weeks or more and you don't want a male interfering with the babies. If you want to keep two chinchillas together keep two sisters together from birth but don't seperate them at all.

yes, give tehm something to keep them stimulated and mentally challenged!
Oh! please remove the Ferret from the cage, first. Big no-no to mix them in a small environment...
