The color depends on what you wear but if you want it natural wear golden tones and for any color, make sure it's darker, and not a very bright color

I worked as a makeup artist for a long time and still do it for weddings. You have a lot of choices based on your skin and hair color.
The only thing I would not recommend is anything in the pink or red family.
If you have green or hazel eyes variations of purples and yellows look great. Shades of green and brown are a great contrast on blue eyes.
The biggest thing with colors if you are unsure of them is to blend them with a neutral. You can use a bright blue base and then accent the top arch under the brow with a "bone" color and the crease with a brown. Bright colors create drama sometimes but you can play with then to get a more subtle effect using neutrals like silver, grey, tan and brown.
Try playing with some variations (eye makeup remover nearby) to get some ideas.
The basic rule is that a well done up eye is at least three shades, light at the top, medium across the lid and dark in the crease.
A single shade of eye color is not going to have the same depth and effect and using multiples blended the right way (the same goes for lip color by the way).
I would also say if you are serious about making your eye makeup look great get serious about your tools too. I've worked for several cosmetic lines over the years and quality brushes make a huge difference.
MAC makes decent brushes for the beginer with reasonable prices. Just start with an all over and a crease brush and go from there.
If you want to try a darker or smoky eye do your eyes before you put your foundation on. That way if you have to clean up stray dark eyeshadow with remover it's no big deal.
Most of all just have fun with it and try stuff out.
