Xin Chao Em;

My Father served in Vietnam in 1964-1965. My father married my Mother in Saigon and she was the second war bride from Vietnam. I was born in America, and am one of the oldest half-breed (American/Vietnamese) children. I have uncles that served in South Vietnam and North Vietnam military during the war. I am engaged to a girl in Ha Noi. I have been studying Vietnam and the Vietnam War for many years. It is likely that I know more about your country than even you do.

Em tieng Eng khong tot. Americans khong hieu em.
(You English is not good. Americans don't understand you)

I had reviewed your previous questions, and I believe there is a great misunderstanding between you and those who answer your questions that I hope to clarify with you. I believe that you are probably trying to learn better English or make American friends by asking questions on Yahoo Answers. It is unfortunate that your questions are not very clear, which has caused many to give you improper answers or become offensive.

Most of my country does not know Vietnam today or the great changes that have occurred since your American War (our Vietnam War). They do not understand that most of the Vietnamese today were born after the war, and do not have the issues that your parents may have with Americans back then. All we know and see is what had happened over 30 years ago, which is a terrible memory full of corruption and lies from our own government that has cost the lives of many brave American soldiers and has crippled many more forever. This was a war that has left our country with great humiliation that all Americans still share today.

Your country has moved forward since the War and have almost forgotten about it. My country still remembers the war, because it has left deep scars for us to remember. There are also many Viet Kieu here who will never forget the war and continue to remind others of what happened. They remind us of Ho Chi Minh killing thousands of his own people in North Vietnam so he will have no opposition to his power. They remind us of the communists killing hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese and put many more in prison after the war ended. They remind us of con lai (half-breed) children like myself who were treated terribly through most of their lives. Many of the Viet Kieu will make sure that the scars Americans bear from the war will continue to bleed.

America’s renewed relationship with your country is very positive and will grow with promise of great friendship and prosperity. More Americans will make friends with more Vietnamese as we heal from our wounds and put the war behind us, but it will still take some time. Please continue to reach out to Americans and make more American friends. You will help to spread the kindness and generosity of friendship that I had experienced when I was in Vietnam recently and allow Americans to heal our wounds more easily.

Chao Em

Vietnam (Vietnamese: Việt Nam), officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is a socialist republic in Southeast Asia. Situated in eastern Indochina—bordering China, Laos, Cambodia, as well as the South China Sea—it is the most populous country among the mainland Southeast Asian countries.

The name of the country comes from the Vietnamese Việt Nam, which is in turn a reordering of Nam Việt—the name of an ancient kingdom from the ancestral Vietnamese that covered much of today's northern Vietnam and southern China. Its Chinese cognate, Yue/Yuet, was also a name for ethnic groups living in the proximity of southern China during ancient times.

Frankly, not much. I know that the Vietnamese are hardworking people and they do not give up easily. I know that the Vietnamese children are good at math and science. I know that the Vietnamese cuisine is healthful. I also know that the Vietnamese ladies are good looking and kind-hearted. Oh, and the Vietnamese language sounds very musical!

I want to go.... My Vietnamese friends tell me about the great beaches and how nice saigon (that's what they call it...) is in summertime. Plus I love Vietnamese food. Some day I will see it.
