There is no way to do it without hurting the children. However, you can be civil with the spouse and that will be good for the children. Try to part ways in a nice manner. Avoid fighting over petty things. Keep custody split down the middle. You're obviously concerned for the children so equal time with each parent will be good for them. Let them know that you both still love them but just can't get along very well. It's better for the kids to be with parents who are happier apart from each other than together and miserable and fighting all the time. Parents being miserable and not getting along is not good for kids.

The children are going to be hurt. Put yourself in their shoes. Everything they have known and grown up with is going to change and they have no control of it. How would you feel?

If children are part of a divorce the parents better make sure the marriage can not be saved. Just because one or the other wants out is not a good enough reason.

If the divorce is going to happen be open with the children and get them and parents to counseling.

You can stop the hurt but you might be able to help by getting professional help by counseling.

You both should talk to the children and explain that even though the two of you have problems, that it has nothing to do with them. Don't argue in front of them, and always remind them how much you both love them. Don't talk down about your spouse , always have something positive to say about each other where the kids are concerned.

The best parents are happy parents. Even if you are apart, your kids will get the best of each of you vs. together and miserable you would be apart and happy.
