Guam, is a U.S. territory. It has a population of approximately 171,000. The capital is Agana. It is the largest of the Mariana Islands. It is 212 square miles.

It is the closest I see and it is approximately 1,917 statute miles and 1,666 nautical miles southeast of Shanghai, China.

My answer would be the Aleutian islands. Though I don't know how far from China.

I do know that the Japanese managed to fly some bombers there during WWII so I don't think it could be more than 1500 miles.
