Nothing on the radio today will be popular in 10 years. Proof of that can be found in looking back. Music and artists from 10 years ago are nowhere to be found today. Music from 20 years ago was also similarly replaced from 1986 to 1996.

The gradual transition in genres comes from diversification.

R&B of the 60s transitioned into Rap in the 80s and 90s. Now Reggae and Reggaeton are making inroads into that format.

Surf Rock of the 60s gave way to protest rock, then pop rock, then hard rock. Today's rock format looks to niche programming, actually creating genres (grunge, rap-rock, etc.) in order to infuse the stations with new music. As alternative music styles become more mainstream, look for harder rock, punk rock, and even screamo to become more common in the playlists.

And look for more combination styles to arise. As mentioned, reggaeton and rap-rock are combinations of styles. Even radio "emo" is really just pop-punk, with occasional goth tendencies. Perhaps dance music will find other new niches (than reggaeton) by creating hybrid styles with other genres.

Though I am not a strong proponent of it, rap will be in music fashion. Whether or not the lyrics will be cleaner is very much a coin toss.

Pop will be lulled to a silent minority of the musical spectrum. No more bubblegum babylon of pop sensations. Any one (like Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake) who was already associated with the bubblegum pop has already reinvented their image and music, so the moguls of pop music are long gone.

Indie rock will get more exposure as it is now, but it probably won't explode like rap did in the early 90's. More unknown bands will be discovered.

Techno will still probably be a minority. The last few big techno songs were "heaven" by dj sammy and "everytime we touch" by cascada. Those are the one hit wonders of today's techno that will continue in a patern in the future.

Reggaetone will probably be excedingly popular by demand of the music from the Latino crowds. The lyricist Daddy Yankee will probably be a "legend". Because of the rapidly growing amounts of reggaetone radio stations and podcasts, it'll be a hit for sure.

Hope i answered your question correctly!

I beg to differ jim... Look at Radiohead- the Bends and OK Computer are still immensely popular, as is the Joshua Tree
Smashing Pumpkins are still popular
Songs off Blood SugarSexMagik are still on the radio.

Of course Pac and Biggie are still around.

As for now, hip hop will still be playing (real stuff- Talib, Nas, Jayz, Kanye),
Rock on teh other hand, still feels rather sporadic. pop stuff now like the killers, or green day won't be around

purchase, purchase, purchase. element one million) production hasn't ever been more beneficial effectual. There are particularly a lot no unlistenable songs because even wack emcees have great backing beats. element 2) Rhyming hasn't ever been more beneficial experienced. With the organic progression of hip-hop, wide-spread one syllable rhyming is seen as primitive, multis are seen as needed, and many emcees flow above and previous and spit ridiculous, futuristic ****. except it truly is not futuristic, it truly is at present. i am going to't intricate in this element properly because i do not recognize a thanks to assert what I mean. element 3) there is more beneficial style than ever. Any type of rap you opt for, no matter if it truly is club rap, stoner rap, punchline rap etc. there is more beneficial of each and every style than ever earlier, and a large number of latest kinds which have by no ability been explored earlier. causes people imagine it truly isn't any more beneficial effectual. one million) adverse media insurance. i am going to apply an analogy. In events each and every man or woman is conscious about Pacman Jones and Ron Artest adverse moves. even if, what number of people learn about Dikembe Mutombo or Stephon Marbury's goodwill. Or Stephen Jackson speaking at Oakland colleges about violence. Everytime people listen about a favorable tale, they trust it really is an remoted case. it truly is because the media spotlights the undesirable and conceals the solid. it truly is an analogous with rap. what number circumstances have you ever heard that "ninety 9% of rap is advertisement bullshit?" heavily, imagine about what number high quality rap artists there are available, and then imagine about how unfaithful that statement is. 2) Laziness- Too many listeners settle for what they listen as hip-hop because they don't favor to dig a touch deeper and pay interest to all that hip-hop has to furnish. Or they're going to flow a touch deep, locate Talib Kweli and Immortal technique, imagine they have went as far as they could possibly flow, and then purely talk about those emcees even as railing on the mainstream. 3) old college bias- a number of the listeners have a bias in the route of the old college because they grew up with that and stumble on it with the staggering years of their existence, or loved that the staggering hip-hop in many circumstances floated as a lot because the mainstream back then as against sticking interior the underground those days. so they champion the old college and trash the hot college to make themselves experience prouder about their time and their song.
