Is this why no more manned missions have went up? Because LEM almost stuck one of them?

2 mile high formations would probably be visible from Earth-based telescopes especially when the terminator allows them to be illuminated in front of a dark background. Lower peaks are certainly visible with appropriate optics. Who needs the tapes?

As to why no additional manned missions, my opinion is that the Apollo program was more of a publicity stunt in order to show American superiority in the technological realm after the shock of Sputnik and the early Russian successes.

If there were several-mile high formations on the moon a Lunar module would just need to go on a decent path that avoided those formations. Everest is 6 miles high and aircraft still are able to fly in that area, they just have to avoid it if they are at a low enough altitude.
