In the days when washing machines weren't as efficient and it was harder to get out stains, it was common practice to not wear white in the winter when there was more mud and dirt that could get on the clothes.
So, somewhere along the way, it became common practice to not wear white until after Easter and not again after Labor Day. This goes also for patent leather shoes, for the same reason.

I personally think it's stupid-- it's like Labor Day marks the end of summer and you are only supposed to wear white before then. I guess it's too bright of a color for winter. Whatever! I wear whatever color I want to wear regardless of what time of year it is!!
Reading this question reminded me of the movie "Serial Mom." Ever seen it?? One of the jurors was wearing white shoes and it was after Labor Day. Serial Mom freaked out and killed her over it. Dumb movie, but funny in it's own way, too. LOL

You can start wearing white after Memorial Day, and you stop wearing it after Labor Day. It's always been that way. There is a "winter white" though, that you can wear in winter. It's sort of a creamy color, almost white.

White is a spring & summer color, thus wearing it after Labor Day means you're not into the Fall/Autumn season of clothing. That's when off white, cream, ivory, etc comes into play with fashion colors.

White is for summer, reflecting sun and heat, Labor day marks the cultural beginning of Autumn, though it does not happen until the 21st of September.

Don't ask me why, but white is supposed to be worn only in summer and labor day being the last official day of summer everybody wears it before it becomes 'inappropriate'.
I only wear it to goth clubs regardless of the season.
