Arthur Conan Doyle decided to "kill off" his character Sherlock Holmes once upon a time.

So he created a nemesis for Holmes, Professor Moriarty.

The two battle each other for months, Holmes deducing Moriarty's plans and identifying his cronies and busting them one by one.

Finally, Moriarty declares war on Holmes. Assassins were searching for Holmes.

Holmes and Watson run for it.

Finally Moriarty corners Holmes at Reichenbach Falls, and later Dr. Watson discovers signs of a struggle, and a note in Holmes' handwriting.

Moriarty wanted to take his revenge personally and fought Holmes on the edge of a precipice.

Both men vanished afterward, but there were no living witnesses to what happened.

Holmes is apparently dead. And Moriarty must be too, or he would be crowing about defeating the great Sherlock Holmes.

But fans refused to accept the death of Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle finally brought back his character in the story "The Empty House".

It seems Holmes defeated Moriarty, but faked his death to protect Watson. Assassins would have kept coming until Holmes was really dead. And Watson would have died to prevent that, of course.

So, Holmes adopts another identity, pretending to be Professor Challenger, his cousin.

And then he quietly hunts down Moriarty's remaining thugs and 'drops the dime' on them one by one.

Until the last of them tried to off him for real in "The Empty House".

With this last thug dealt with, Holmes moved back in with Watson and went back to being a "Consulting Detective".

So how did Holmes "really" die ?

He didn't. He eventually retired to Sussex and became an entymologist specializing in Bees.

He invented the idea of marking bees with tiny drops of paint so he could study their movements -- an approach that is really used today.

He also discovered that bee stings help with arthritis.

He was killed by Moriarty ... fighting and falling off a cliff as I recall.

So much fan demand made our author, Doyle, write a way for him to come back!

He died? Damn with all the books and movies and TV series out there I thought he would go on forever. Maybe you should write a book where he actually does?
