“Necessity is the Mother of Invention.” http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/17/messages/524.html
So on which invention or discovery do we put the spotlight? The wheel? The light bulb? The engine? Architecture? Aircraft? Plumbing? Electricity? Photography? Medicine? Satellites? Rockets? Telecommunication? The internet? Bullet-proof vests? Music instruments? Mascara?
Dinosaurs? Evolution? Science? Philosophy? Reflexology?
Let me tell you a story:
Once upon a time, not too long ago, I went on a long vacation to an island far away from home. Thanks to the wheel and tarred highways, it took me only 20 minutes to get to the airport. Imagine I had to take a donkey through a field! It would have taken me days! Thanks to aircraft, it took me only 12 hours to reach my destination. Imagine I had to take a boat! I would have basically reach my destination and then had to head back home immediately!
Once I got there, I realized how important a proper plumbing system is. On that island, you are not allowed to flash away any toilet paper in the toilets! Eeeeuw!
While I was on the island, there were times that I was alone, that I did not know anybody else on the island. Thanks to the internet and telecommunication, I could still have contact with my friends and family at home and all around the globe! In fact, I met an awesome friend from a completely different continent on the internet in that time, whom I’d like to keep as a friend for ever!
Also, thanks to photography, I now have a huge collection of photos to remind me of my awesome vacation!
This is the shortest possible version of this story. I could get technical and take up all the space on the internet saying thanks to this invention and thanks to that discovery making my life easier!
Still, what would be the greatest invention or discovery of all times? I’d say….
…the discovery of the capacity of the human brain!! Why? Well, at first it is the human brain inventing and discovering all the time! It is only the need that inspires us! But knowing what our brain capacity is should be motivation in itself to let us even invent and discover more! The memory capacity of the brain is apparently between one and ten terabytes! [According to myth the humain tends to use less than 10% of the actual brain capacity! But how do we prove that? Still I do believe we are not using our brains to the full. Humans are lazy and convenient. Yet, need forces us to invent to make life even easier and more convenient. (I can philosophise on this alone for hours!)]
But also, by understanding the brain, we are now able to understand ourselves in terms of perception, behavioral sequences, reflexes, instincts, emotions, thinking and other integrative activities, which make our lives easier!
And another thing, we now even know what brain food is! (Check link for detail)
Oh what a lengthy boring answer! I should have just answered “chocolates”!

Indoor plumbing. I could live by candles, cook over an open fire, wait for the Pony Express to deliver mail to me, and even take a horse to get around. However - living everyday using an outhouse and washing with a bowl of water would suck. I live in N. Idaho that would be one freakin' cold trek to the bathroom in the middle of the night if we still had outhouses.

This question was asked years ago in "Scientific America". They asked all the top minds. #1 was the "Gutenberg Press". This invention used movable type to allow the wide dissemination of information and literature to everyone. Before, all writing had to be copied by hand.

The computer. If it weren't for the invention of the computer, we wouldn't be answering your question. And I never would have met my gf.
