I was just wondering if it was possible to share files between the 2 computers, a laptop and desktop, just through the same internet connection. I have a DSL connection with a Linksys wireless router. The DSL modem is connected directly to the desktop, and the laptop is running off of the wireless router and I was wondering if I could share files between the two. Will I need to set up a local network, or will it be easier than that? Thanks.

It's not as difficult as you think to set up a local network and set it for sharing files. There are likely wizards on your computer to walk you through it.

Yes, You can share them. You need to turn on File and Print sharing on both the systems. Open Network connections, right click on the Wireless Connection, properties, check File and Printer sharing.

You can run the Network Setup Wizard on both the systems. The files you want to share can be put into the "Shared Folders" folder. You should see it when you open My Computer.

Once you do that you can open Network Connections and you should see computer A on Computer B. If you open it up, you should see the shared folder.

I may have missed a step or two because it hs been a while since I did this but hopefully you got the general idea of what to do.

first you have to make sure you set the folders to be shared on your local network. then in your control panel run the wireless network setup wizard. you can also share a printer this way too. run the wizard on both computers. and make sure the router is configured to allow this.

also you need to open the files for sharing. I do this this so I can work from the main computer on the lap top in the back room where the TV is. Make sure your network is the only one that can access it. in XP there are step by step instructions, super easy to do!

if you have winxp pro then it is simple just open my computer and go to tools menu and select folder options then select all the way at the bottom and uncheck the simple file sharing box and click apply but if you are using windows xp home then you will have to use the wireless network setup wizard.
