Psoriasis is a chronic, life-long disorder, which varies in severity, has genetic factors, and is not contagious. Most people who have psoriasis of the nails also have skin psoriasis. Only 5% of people with psoriasis of the nails do not have skin psoriasis.

If you don’t have skin psoriasis, it is unlikely you have nail psoriasis. Although the conditions may co-exist, the infection would not cause the psoriasis. My advice would be to see a good dermatologist as soon as possible.

There is a condition called psoriatic arthritis that affects the nails and looks much like a nail infection - and it may be present in someone who also has psoriasis. Psoriatic arthritis also affects the joints of the fingers or toes. You may have to find a rheumatologist or podiatrist who has worked with it to get a correct diagnosis.
