I'm glad that you did say MOST African Americans sound distinct in voice from the rest of Americans. This is because of demographics.
People are products of their environments therefore if you grow up speaking improper English you will speak improper English. This is the case of most African Americans or anyone who grows up economically disadvantaged.
I do believe that it is ignorant for you to say that Jewish People have a certain voice even though it is exactly the opposite of what I say in the paragraphs above. If you were to put an Asian child with a Jewish family and let him grow up there would you still consider him to be Jewish?

I have been privileged through my years to have adopted and fostered children from very diverse backgrounds, in addition to my own two children. Some of my children, though Caucasian, actually often were mistaken over the phone as being African-American... having been raised prior around the population predominantly. Than again, two of African-American daughters are often teased because they are told "they don't sound or talk Black"... I, too, am African-American but only hook into "Ebonics" when I am with Black friends and I, also am told - I don't "sound" Black.
I actually find it offensive to think that today, when we have such blending in our ethnic groups... that one tonality, vocal nuances, or jargon is exclusive anymore... have you been watching 'America's Got Talent'... how about the Asian group with the tight "street corner" accapella sound that is identifiable by most Blacks?... and how about the 11 year old winner, Bianca? Tell me she doesn't throw down like a "sista"?
In conclusion... it is in my learning that this is something that is environmental surrounding, family, friends, and also choice. One group of kids who want to be identified with a particular groove will work at it until they fit in... that goes for ANY race.

That's not an all truism.
When I first started listening to Howard Stern I precieved Robin as white and was totally shocked when I finally saw her on this TV show!
Your point of view simply re-enforces the concepts that made the Amos n Andy radio show work.
It also is the concept of how Cohen on the Telephone worked.
I vant u to send the car pin ter. The car pin ter. CAR PIN TER. U know, the man vat hits the nails vit a hammer.

What does a Jew sound like? Because I can't think of what that would sound like. People say I sound white, but I think it's because I speak English correctly. Maybe that's what it is, because we have a very... um... distinctive way of speaking English.
