It is called syrup of ipecac. It induces vomiting by irritating the stomache lining and also by triggering the vomit reflex in the brain. A widely used remedy in the past, it is rarely recommended now. It has also been linked to abuse by people with eating disorders.

Ipecac, I think it's one of the things people keep in there first aid supplies in case you have to induce vomiting. Of course it would be wise to call poison control first.
