rust is formed when iron is exposed to moist air, then it gets oxidized to Fe(OH)3. but this reaction is not direct, infact various other reactions take place which finally result in formation of Fe(OH)3 and its lke a electrolytic cell. (very complicated)!!
rust does weaken iron but doesn't change the properties of IRON , though it might have sum peculiar chemical behavior.

Rust is the oxidation of iron. The iron changed from Fe to FeO. The Fe properties don't change, but the amount of Fe is less. Like a piece of wood burning. The charcoal is weaker than the wood. The unburned wood is still wood like before, but the more that burns, the weaker the structure.
;-D Rust is fire in slow motion!

Most simply put, rust does not weaken iron; rust is the residual of the iron that has already been weakened.

Ofcourse rust weakens iron. I hava had a experience myself.
It does change the chemical properties and the physical.

It weakens the iron. Rust is not a chemical reaction. It is a physical change.

Rust is iron converted to iron oxide. Iron oxide has completely differnt properties to iron. Iron oxide is in fact so different that it is not a metal at all. It is not merely weak iron it is completely knackered iron!

If its little rust, u can get rid of it. But, if its so much that the iron is getting bitten up, u better watch out.

yes it changes properties because the rust is cause by the chemical change that had occured...so the iron changes it's color, texture, 'smell' and overall appearance
remember: chemical properties- color change, gas given off [either it turns hotter or colder], energy changes, and yes, change in overall apperance...=]
