Apparently the writer of the book 'the devil wears Prada' claim the book to be fictional and the characters being fictional but what the newspapers are saying that the author herself used to work at vogue at many people at vogue were interviewed and they do find an uncanny resemblance to the editor at vogue. Whether its true or not we don't know

The spitting, undoubtable, correct 100% image of Anna Wintour of Vogue ca.2002! The publisher Conde Nast even considered law suits to stop the book and then the movie to be produced. I worked in the fashion mag and design scene in Manhattan in those days, and Anna Wintours obsession with PRADA was and is legendary - hence the title. Lived in the restaurant (CRAFT) next to where the sous chef *** boyfriend worked. Details like her twins are not true. But the dry cleaning deposit in her house and the throwing of her accessoires on her assistants desk are impossible to make up.
Vogue magazine itself is a target of the story line, because the book/movie details how only certain photographers, certain fashion brands and certain models 'make' it into the editorial section. Other mags do the same, but are not as brazen. What the movie doesn't show is that the assistants who slave for the Anna Wintours for free designer-handbags and occasional brushes with celebrities are ivy league, good looking girls with either rich parents or rich boy friends footing the bill for their living expenses in Manhattan. We called them "fashion hookers". But I guess one has to have one positive person in a movie to be able to identify with. Like Holly Golightly in 'Breakfast at Tiffany'. Oh, they say that she was a hooker too, right?
