well, gangs are usually formed by people with a common struggle.... MS-13 was founded back in the 70's by some south american immigrants who got crap from everyone in their neighborhood. These were guyz that had long hair and thot Black Sabbath was the best. They didn't have shaved heads and knee high socks on unitl the mid 80's. So they banded together to watch out for eachother and now an international gang has formed ...... It's not a latino thing. Certain people take things a certain way and gangs offer a sense of offensive security for some people.

since alot of latinos are either 1st or 2nd generation in this country, for one thing the gang probably provides some sort of protection against anyone trying to take advantage of them. If you look at the mafia or gangs from way, way back.....alot of the people were either immigrants or 2nd generation....so I'm thinking there might be some similarity between the two. It's kind of like they are sticking together in the beginning. And I know there is a difference between organized crime and a street gang in several ways....but I also think something can be said of the formation of a gang/group or whatever based on how long they've been in the country. I also understand that many people in gangs have always lived here.......but it seems that the ethnic gangs might have some similar reasons for their formations.

Concord Conrad,
It is called survival.
If the majority of the people
are against you, you tend to
hang with those like you.
It is not cultural in their native
countries, but it becomes
cultural when in foreign
lands.
It's amazing what a human
being does for self-preservation,
no pun intended.
In fact, the Latinos have
gangs, and as you well
state, they are not organized
crime syndicates.
However, some immigrant
Italians, once in the USA
felt they had to resort
to the maffia or Cossa
Nostra, which is definitely
cultural.
The same applies to some
of thee Chinese immigrants
that arrived in the late 19th
century, but most strikingly,
with some of the new wave
of Hong-Kong Chinese
immigrants and their
Thongs. Again, cultural.
Good question,
and lots of food for thought.

Why does everyone think that, all the non-hispanics think if we hispanics do something weird and out of the blue it's cultural related it's not.Just like there is alot of Black people in gangs too,it doesn't mean it's cultural.Us latinos live hard lives,we get judged everyday and sterotypes, maybe the ones that join are under alot of pressure, don't be so quick to pull the race card

It is kinda a cultural thing and it is not specific to latinos. I think most ethnic groups have their own gangs. This is due to the fact that most people join gangs so that they can find a substitute for family and a place where they feel that they belong.

latinos seem to be very family based. They also have the machismo factor which latino males have to show how tought they are. Over the years there has been a mass influx of latinos coming to America. It may seem like alot but there are probably just as many latinos in gangs as are other races

Yes, stop generalizing, Mexicans are lovely people, blah blah blah. I took that from the script most people on yahoo answers use. But my honest answer is, because they are little punks who need to have the sht kicked out of them by some real men.
