If they produce young, there is a chance that they could have birth defects, like retardation. It's the same with humans if they would breed with close relatives. Animals don't know any better and usually the young are either born dead or they die shortly after birth.

Most animals do not have the sense to know that another particular animal is related to them. Animal sexual drive is driven by instinct and make no distinction between related or not. Humans have rational and logical distinction and in general find such activity mentally disturbing -- except when we're drunk.

Some animals will do that and some will not. And did you ever notice that it's an INSULT for human beings to be referred to as animals? There's a reason. We aren't supposed to act like them.
