"Vastly slower" is an exaggeration. While cable broadband is usually a step or two ahead of DSL, it's not miles ahead.
For example, I have DSL pro through SBC Yahoo! and I get about 310KB/s download speeds. I know a lot of cable users that get anywhere form 350-400KB/s. That's not a huge difference. Plus I pay almost half of what a lot of cable users pay. I'd say I was getting the better end of the deal!
In addition, just think back about 4 years ago. The average cable broadband was only getting 150-200KB/s. DSL has surpassed that in just a few short years. So it's not right to make it seem so inferior. Both technologies are always getting faster each year...

For DSL this sadly is probably a good speed. DSL is vastly slower than cable Internet. I don't know what yahoo dsl is like but it might be worse than phone company DSL. On cable I can download up to 400KB/s. I usually get 40-120kb/s when downloading from a website. When using peer-to-peer I get much higher speeds. My ping speed is over 1200kb/s. That's typically what you get with a cable Internet connection.

dont know what u are exectly trying to ask. if u r asking that "i m getting download speed of say 40 kbps on yahoo dsl and is it normal" then my answer is that it depends upon ur service provider and the plan u choose. say if u r using broadband service of 256kbps then u will only get download speed of 32kbps. well when our service provider say speed of 256kbps, they a actually taking in kilo bits not kilo bytes and when we download something we get speed in kile bytes (i.e. i byte equals to 8 bits) so just divide 256 by 8 and u will get 32. to know is it normat that u get 39 kbps speed just divide that speed that ur service provider provides with 8. if it is more than that then make sure ur windows isn't updating itself. if yes then turn it off. for that right click on my computer then select properties. then select window update tab and turn it off. if it is already turned off then make sure no software is updating itselt. lsay ur antivirus. and if no sowtware is updating itself then make sure u dont have trojan installed on ur pc. well accroding to me use firewall software. then u can make sure that any unwanted software is accessing the internet. for a good firewall software use zone alarm . to download that visit www.download.com. install the latest version . u will get 30 days trial. to change it to full licenced enter this licence key cgx5c-ec8wq-2sjjn-ejhpi4-uncgu0 .
hope this will solve ur problem.
take care
good bye
