I always thought the 305 wasn't as tough as the old 350s, but i recently saw a video on youtube of some kids trying to blow one up, and it just wouldnt die. I know GM v8s are typically bulletproof, but which one is tougher, a 305 or a 350?

chevy makes some of the best, but depending on what you want to use it for, the 305 and 350 are identical except for the size of the cylinders. the 305 doesn't have the power of the 350 under load, but that's about all the difference between them. the actual blocks are identical but the machining is slightly different.

Man these people are wicked...the 305 is weak compared to the 350. They have a bigger bore...althought they have the same stroke...the heads are different..some 350s are stronger in castings like a 4 bolt main..most people dont want a 305 and u can rebuild a 350 cheaper sometimes!! Good luck!!

Mr too sexy , the 305 and 350 have the same stroke (3.48")and the cranks and rods interchange. The counter weights are drilled more in a 350 , but they are the same . The 305 has a smaller bore , so it has a thicker cylinder wall and should hold up longer under abuse technically.
55 - 57 / 265 - 3.750 x 3.000 stroke
57 - 67 / 283 - 3.875 x 3.000
68 - 69 / 302 - 4.000 x 3.000
76 - 93 / 305 - 3.736 x 3.480
68 - 73 / 307 - 3.875 x 3.250
62 - 69 / 327 - 4.000 x 3.250
67 - 97 / 350 - 4.000 x 3.480

The only things that makes a 350 tougher is that they can come with a four bolt main and the non-roller valvetrain is a bit stronger. Otherwise they are pretty much identical.

350 has more power, but the 305 will get better gas mileage.

They are equally tough. I still have an old 77 Chevy, I did overhaul it once, the valve guide seals started to dry out and made it smoke some, since I had the engine out I went ahead and overhauled it.
