It's a theory that says that you can prevent people from getting together with other people of the opposite sex, and creating even more people, by putting a rubber membrane between their gametes.

As has been noted previously, membrane theory is an extension of string theory. One of the interesting features of membrane theory is in terms of cosmology and the formation of the universe. It is thought that our universe, Big Bang, came from two 'branes' touching each other to allow the observerved values of the universe.

A useful feature of this theory , compared with string theory is that experiments can be run that test for whether the strength of gravity may increase at smaller scales, ( I guess the value of G, gravitational constant) is still the same at microscopic scales.

Membrane theory is an extension of string theory. Read "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene.

Membrane theory is apart of string theory. It is a theory inside a theory, basically, our own universe would be one of these membranes. If you goto PBS's website, look for a video series called 'The Elegant Universe', they have it online to watch.
