A running back is a player who does not take the snap, but insteads lines up behind the o-line and performs the majority of the running duties. A running back can be either a half-back or a full-back.
A half-back is normally the primary runner, and as such gets the majority of the carries. Also known as the tailback, a nickname given because of his position in the formation...the very back or the tail.
A full-back is another type of running back and is generally the stronger variation of a tailback. His duty is primarily pass protection and run blocking, however there are several full-backs that have the ability to pound it on the ground and even recieve out of the backfield (mike alstott, john ritchie, zach crockett, etc.).
So the difference between a tailback and a halfback...the name.
Where as a running back is a general term that can describe either a halfback/tailback or a fullback.

Well it depends on what formation you are in. In a traditional wishbone you have 2 halfbacks and 1 tailback and in a I formation u could have 1 fullback and 1 tailback ...basically all running backs are a variety of different spots depending again on formation. These guys are pretty much the same but tailbacks get the ball more carries typically! They are also wing backs that go in formation and usually go out for pass.

All I wanted to do was answer the question I read a few days ago but now cant find it.
The question was, where is Ron Dane? He's in Denver trying to stay on the roster.
As far as the answer to what is the difference between tailback, halfback and running back?
For all my fellow and gal fans that answered they are all the same...shame on you.
For all of you that differentiated between the formations, the BEST answer is by C. Millionaire.
All of those other formations are just variations of those 3 original positions that C. Millionaire so skillfully explained.
Aaand, a big and hardy LOL for Mr. Bob for the funniest answer.
What makes it funny to me is that for the most part...he's right!
I'm only level 1 so I can't vote yet.
I'm also visually impaired so it's hard for me to do a lot of reading...but I'm not a quitter. I'm kinda like Steely Dan's, Deacon Blues.
The chorus/refrain(?) is:
They got a name for the winners in the world,
I want a name when I lose,
they call Alabama the Crimson Tide,
call me Deacon Blues.

Tailback and Halfback (same thing, different term) are usually the ones that run the ball mostly and running back refers to both tailbacks/halfbacks as well as fullbacks. Fullbacks block for the tailback/halfback generally

there is no difference. tailback and halfback are just nicknames for running back. other running back positions would be full back, wing back, flanker, I-back. they all do different things on an offense, but tailback halfback's primary duty is to run the ball.

half back comes from describing the I formation. the half back was originally the blocking back, so named because he was halfway between the quarterback and the fullback (who actually got most of the carries) it's now evolved to describe the running back (a player who sets up behind the o-line and does not take the snap) who receives the majority of the carries, also know as featured back. tailback is another term for the featured back

it designates where they stand in relation to the line. quarterbacks are a quarterback, halfbacks are halfback, tailbacks are on the end, and running backs are right next to the quarterback;

They all denote the same position. Running Back is the most commonly used name, because that's what they most often do: run with the ball.
