The problem with string theory is the lack of observation. The various string theories work mostly as mathmatical excercises, and even then there are holes.
To me, it seems to complex to be true. When the Theory of Everything is found, it will be simple, mark my words.

Well, no doubt, special-chem, that you can be sure there are mathematical 'adjustments'/'engineering' needed in trying to get strings to support the HUGE Adult Fairytale that is 'Evolutionary theory'! [after all, the Bigger and more complex scientists make the story, the more it can impress people and bring in so many extra variables as to mesmerize their minds ... so they don't know what to think!!]
"Scientists" don't need much by way of anything mathematical then [not even "constants"] to convince people!!
It takes some amazing stretches of imagination to support evolution, though, from the actual findings!!
You have to work really hard on story twisting and 'explaining' to come up with support for this evolutionary fairytale!

There's a whole bunch of various string theories - but they all have some major flaws which they disguise by adding various universal constants to make up for them.
membrane theory is better but still suffers from some of that too.
In response to Dr.C: this question has nothing to do with evolution.

Belief has little room in objective science- but I do think string theory is a viable route in search for a quantum theory of gravity.

i actually do believe in it. because if it doesn't exist in any other form, how are we going to explain life? we've gotten the particles down to the electomagnetic bits, and any lower i believe that they're controled by strings. the only thing that i don't get is how come there's FIVE strings because that doesn't make sense, but i guess they'll whittle it down to one sooner or later.

Unfortunately, I only understand the very basics of it. but it resonates in my mind as true. It just makes sense that everything is ultimately made of energy. But I just can't get the concept of all those different dimensions.

Sounds good, but the evidence is pretty thin ...
