The folks on Yahoo! Answers are not going to have a better answer for you than your wife's doctor! This is something you need to discuss with her doctor.

Sounds like she is getting the glucose tolerance test (GTT) for gestational diabetes. There is one given around 28 weeks (although this varies) with 50gm glucose for 1 hr. If she doesn't pass that one, another one is given with the 100gm glucose over a 3 hr period with several blood draws at 1 hr intervals. If she doesn't pass this one (and there are specific parameters) then she is diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The baby's weight sounds low for 8 mos gestation though...are you sure that's right?

I don't know what the aspirin is for unless your wife has a need to thin the blood, perhaps a clotting disorder, blood clots in the veins or other areas or antiphospholipid antibodies which can cause miscarriage but are helped by taking 1 baby aspirin or low dose aspirin a day. A lot of folks don't know this but some women even require heparin shots every day to thin the blood. We just delivered a patient the other day who was 38 weeks pregnant with twins hospitalized on a low dose heparin drip due to a deep vein thrombsis (blood clot).

I need more info about your wife's situation to even venture a guess as to why the doctor is prescribing one baby aspirin a day but it certainly is something that is done for various reasons.

you didn't indicate the frequency.

aspirin, an analgesic which has a blood-thinning contra-indication, has been shown to have a negative effect on early fetal development. as your wife is now into her eighth month, your ob/gyn might have decided that other pathology in the mother takes precedence.

tylenol has been proven safe for minor aches and pains without undue risk to the developing fetus.

i'd ask the doctor for a fully defined reason for ANY drug intake during pregnancy and its possible affect on fetal health.

Low-dose aspirin thins the blood. They may be trying to dilute the glucose to control the diabetes. She might also have high blood pressure.

Are you in the U.S.? This isn't standard practice here.

I'd get a second opinion.

Your fasting sugar level in the morning is always higher.I had gestastional diabetes and have diabetics in family. It should go down after u eat.My doctor said not to take anything not even tylenol that late in pregnancy,so u should definitely ? your doctor about why and make sure it is safe.I wouldnt take anything during pregnancy unless i really had to..

As a rule, you aren't supposed to take aspirin when you are pregnant. It thins the blood.

Ask the doctor the reason.
