My vote would have to go to Dolly Parton, whether or not she sings it as a duet with Porter Wagoner. Whitney's version is good, but Dolly has a simple, pure quality in her voice that sort of breaks your heart when she sings that song.

Definitely Dolly. One may think Whitney is feeling the emotion of the song when singing it. But she is not. She is only singing it because she thinks she can and she thinks people will like it and buy it and she will make lots of money off of it. Dolly, on the other hand, one can actually feel her emotion when she sings it.

It's a toss-up for me. Whitney's voice blows away Dolly's but Dolly did the song a bit differently that worked.
