Single / separated parents who live far apart, with a kindergarden age kid(s), and have shared custody ...please tell me who was given permission to put their child in the school of their choice and why? I am very interested in all the details so don't be shy. Thanks very much. Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Think this out wisely, my son's have told me horror stories of kids in there class that go to one school for two weeks and then to their school for two weeks. They are a lot older, but what a child learns in Kindergarten are some of the most important skills they will carry with them for life. How far apart do you live? I would think shared custody would still mean in the BEST WELFARE OF THE CHILD!!!!! You have a lot of HOMEWORK to do, find out about both of your school systems, visit them together and make your choice wisely, not based on miles per gallon. This is for your child not what one of you wins.

Would you rather be right and get your own way, or would you rather find a school you can both agree on? I think it should be a school located in between you two, and closer to the house where the kids spend the majority of their time. I am lucky, the other parent is only one suburb away. Have you really not considered moving closer to the other parent to make your child's life much easier?

Jointly pick the best school! This is your childs future not a match of who should pick what school just because it might be closer to one of you. DON"T BE DUMB ON THIS ONE!

You should ask the school questions like:
How many of your teachers hold Master's Degree's in the their subject areas
What type of nationally normed assessment do you use, and how well does this school do on those assessments.
How weel does the school do on state mandated assessments.

If you two do not come to some aggreement on this the Friend of the Court will step in and that just shows NEITHER OF YOU ARE SMART PARENTS! This is your child not a war!

I just went through this with my ex husband. Ultimately I ended up puting our son in a kindergarten near me since I have him Mon -Fri. Whoever has the child during the week days should have them in a school closest to them.
