If I'm not mistaken, I think he was under contract with the Miami Dolphins. So, by retiring, he voided the contract and lost any money that was owed to him from the Dolphins.
He then returned to the league and was signed by the Pats as a free agent.

IMO it's stupid. When someone is going to retire, they should retire and stay retired. That is the whole point of it, they can't play anymore and they are ready to leave the game they love.
Roger Clemens of the Major League Baseball done the same thing. I think it's stupid. He had no business retiring, then 3 days later joining the New England Patriots. I find it to be asinine and I have lost a little respect for Junior Seau because of this idiotic move.
Though, i'm not sure what exactly happened. I grew up learning not to judge people, and I don't mean to do so neither.

From what I have heard, the retirement was real at first. Then the Patriots lost Teddy Bruschi, and called him up. Bill Belicheck called, and gave a good sales job, convincing Seau that the Pats are legit Super Bowl contenders. The thought of getting a ring was too tempting to pass up, so he came out of retirement to join NE.

definite if he receives a hoop he will retire!! i do not foresee him going back to the Chargers. Why does someone retire then one week later receives out of retirement to play for yet another team??? exceptionally the way Junior speaks about the Chargers, because the Chargers were both now unlikely to pay him adequate or desirous to he grow to be too previous to play!!! Junior did not bypass to the Patriots merely because of the hoop!! He knew the Chargers were plenty good that they were Superbowl textile. It grow to be the Chargers that did not desire him!! What they going to be calling him now and asking him to come back??? With a Superbowl ring on his hand his fee might want to be really more effective the what the Chargers are keen to be an previous guy.

I'm pretty sure he planned to retire but then Chad Brown, Monty Beisel, and Teddy Bruschi all got hurt so the Pats called him up.
