What is your honest perception of Italians?

Question

The media bombards us with images of mobsters (The Sopranos, The Godfather, etc.), and I'm concerned that this is negatively affecting people's perception of Italians. I am Italian, and I don't have any mobsters in my family, and I don't know of any mobsters either. My family has always taught me strong morals and values. I hear that Italy's crime rate is lower than the EU average. What is your honest perception of Italians? Please be totally honest.

My French teacher was Italian and I thought very highly of her, she was a wonderful person.

Yes, the media does a horrible job of showing Italians in a bad light. Mobsters are always the main characterization. I have Italians in my family and not a one is a mobster! Not one is named Guido. Not one has left a dead horses head on anyones bed. Look at what the Italians have brought to the world, incredible works of art, beautiful music, food to die for, inventions that make our lives easier, etc., etc. But you rarely hear about that.

i was in Rome last year and i saw nothing wrong with the Italians,the women are attractive,and seem to be a strong force in the lives of their men,the guys i will admit seem to stare at women (my wife like their a new car),i didn't mind,but my wife felt a little uncomfortable after awhile,but over all i don't see and didn't see anything wrong with Italians at all,as for mobster movies,i would not worry too much,an intelligent person can look at the mob thing as just a cultural thing,every country has its problems,if i were you,and I'm not Italian.....i would say screw the people who stereotype Italians....and be proud of who you are and what you can become........use the values your family taught you and be ahead of the rest...

Molto bellissima, or however it's said. Honestly, I know only two Italians, several Italian-Americans, and a few whose ancestors came from Italy and just consider themselves Americans because they were born here, and I like most of them. However, I don't know about others because I don't know them, and I try not to buy into the stereotyping that goes on. You know that's just a way to justify nonacceptance by small groups, don't you? Every small group has done it at one time or another.

When I think of Italians, I think of a guy in a bicycle outfit with shaved legs(that doesn't make me weird ,does it?)Seriously,I think of Marrianne Fontello,what a kisser!Dark hair wine colored lips,whoo!No,honestly,it's Joes Pizza on Sat.nite.Old Joe was Scicillian and had that gray skin.Looked like he rose from the dead everyday at 4 PM to make pies.Weighed about a buck 50,6 ft tall,100 yrs old.Made the best pizza in West Whittier Calif.I love Italians,The architecture,art,statues,....Broads.The "everyday Italian " lady on Food Network.SI chow bella,manga manga,Bon appitito!!!

I associate Italians with the following things:

Hot guys who like the ladies
Great cooks who like to make sure people eat a lot
Kind of loud and fun people
Talk with their hands
Animated
Loyal to friends and family

I guess most of my stereotypes are positive. I don't usually think Mob, at least not seriously. I think most people think of it in a joking way, just because it is such a colorful subject.

The Italians I've known were very nice, honest, hard-working, and family-oriented.

I dated an Italian girl in college. She was a sweet, wonderful, beautiful girl--but DON'T make her mad!!!

The original espresso... pizza... venice "streets" I always think of a sylvester and tweety looney tunes cartoon that was supposed to be in venice where sylvester kept trying to get tweety by climbing along the window ledges above the canals outside the window where tweety was at, don't know why but I've always thought of that one cartoon from when I was a kid.

when i think of italians i think of very nice, beautiful people who take the time to appreciate life through their relaxed lifestyle and who are very welcoming and friendly to everyone, including foreigners. the thought of mobsters never crosses my mind. i actually think of lots of old people. lol

I never watch the Sopranos - not my style.
