If you know how to work with them they do but most people don't know how to use them and they do more harm using them then good. Working with spells is not a game, it's serious business and you have to keep in mind when you use them for something bad and hurt others that they will sooner or later backfire on you.

From what I gather, most Wiccan spells these days are about attracting something to oneself - love, health, etc. You'll get similar results from postive affirmations (writing "I will be a writer." ten times each day, for example). It has to do with aligning the unconscious to find new opportunities. Typically, you'll get what you think about.
Nevertheless, there is something to be said for ritual spellcasting. Rote rituals may provide a mental anchor to help with this aligning. And for all I know there may be something to it. However, for maximum affect, it seems to me that one would need to sublimate the spell - handing it to the unconscious, which will be much better at this sort of thing. This opens spells to attack that results are based on selective memory.
That said, the meaning is not in the detail but in the whole, and if the idea of spellcasting is more meaningful than aligning the unconscious with opportunity, then maybe it doesn't matter how spells work. Live life, and chalk it up to synchronicity.
But no, don't expect to hurl fireballs.

Mine do. Most of the time, anyway.
This is often a bit irritating, because I don't really expect them to, yet somehow, they usually do--if they're well composed and performed with complete confidence, just like prayer. In fact, the two are essentially the same. Prayer is a spoken ritual; ritual is a prayer acted out in symbolism. Both operate on the same principles. Both require confidence (or faith for those who prefer the term). Both have to be in tune with the will of a higher power.
But with these conditions, it's really surprising how often they work.
I have come to expect results and I generally get them.
Don't misunderstand me; I'm not claiming any special powers. You know how it goes, though. Ya turn away one little hurricane, drive off one psychic vampire, fix one college football game, clear a haunted house or two and suddenly everybody starts acting like they think you know what you're doing. Jokes on them.
Nobody has any idea how these things work or why. We're all fumbling in the dark and occasionally discovering something that works, but we never know why.
Some questions simply cannot be answered.
Just my opinion.

That is a matter of perception. As a psychic reader/ investigator and medicine woman, i work with alot of the concepts of Affrimations and self help healing methods. I don't practice with spells as i feel that spells are another word for prayer. There are alternatives to spells. let me give you a example here: say you have a really bad cold and you go to a doctor and he says there isn't anything that he can give you, but in your low time of energy, i came to you and said "ok, since he says that he cannot help you - i can help you place a spell on you to keep all negative away from you....that would be impossible because we live in a world where violance is everywhere. But if i came to you and told you there is a alternative method to 'gain control' over the cold and that is the use of alternative healing methods, such as tea, lemon juice with honey, then that is also a herb - healing and if you pray a poem to go with it, saying 'oh universe i hope this works' then that in alot of ways is like a spell, see? prayers i.e. affrimations -spells, its just a matter of perception and belief.

A lot of people will tell you that they don't, and that's fine. But a lot of people will tell you that they do, and the point is that if something is potentially dangerous and works some of the time, that's a good reason to stay away from it until you have put in quite a lot of study.
Spells do work if you put enough effort in. More to the point, they are like bright lights in the darkness to stray spirits. They will attract anything that is floating around and if you haven't put enough protection around yourself and your house, that can be a problem. If you want to learn about magic, you should start with Draja Mickaharic's Practice of Magic. It is like a mechanic's guide to magic and it is very sound.
Or, just stay away from all of it. That is the safest choice of all. Good night, and good luck.

Yes, but you need good helpers in the spirit world. It doesn't work without practice, and you have to give something to get something. Many things can be done in the other world, which seem very powerful to people in this world, but seem ordinary to the people who work the spells. Most of us are so caught up in our rat race that we do not think we need spells, which are very old knowledge.

Prayer works, and so do spells. There's hardly a difference between the two. Just don't cast anything without some study and practice. Witchcraft is not something to dabble with.

Yes they do but they must be done properly or else doors can be opened that one would regret. A spell is nothing more than the manipulating of nature. It is condemned by the church but the idiots dont realize that everytime they pray for this or that, they are doing a spell.

A spell is a form of prayer almost. So, does praying work?
The answer is yes, but you may not get the answer or outcome you desire.
Blessed Be!

In my humble experience, yeah, they *can* work for you, but...
--keep in mind that most of what you are doing is triggering a chaos-theory style of "butterfly effect" that can only be partly controlled and predicted. Meaning, you likely will not get *everything* you want unless you are willing to put in an inordinate, almost absurd amount of time and effort into doing something *very* humble and simple. But yeah, the broad "gist" or nature of your efforts will work.
If you try to conjure up something, and you end up using some feline or cat-like symbolism (for example, and I actually did this), you may wind up with a *cat* and not a griffon or a lion even, but you will wind up with something *of the nature* of what you asked for. It will be in the ball-park, but you might wind up with a *hot dog* from the stands instead of home plate. If that makes sense.
--also keep in mind that there is almost *always* a price to pay. There is no free lunch even in realms of the "supernatural" or magickal. If you pray for your efforts, you will likely have to swear and *demonstrate* loyalty to the being you are in prayer to.
If you make a sacrifice, it will have to be a sacrifice of something that matters and means something *to you*, or it will have to be something directly *of you*. If you put your hopes and dreams and passions into your work....you can expect to take some manner of emotional damage or living energy drain from what you are doing.
Nothing is for free. Nothing. So be careful what you wish for. Anything or anyone who promises you a freebie in the short term has something *nasty* in mind for you in the long term, no doubt.
Just saying.
