it's a tradition passed down, and like a lot of things it might not have a rational, reasonable explanation. why do we make a wish as we blow out our birthday candles? or wish as we blow away the seeds of a dandelion? - c'est la vie.

I feel we wish upon stars because they symbolize something greater than us. The unknown. When we wish upon a star, we're putting forth our want with everything we own. It's comparable to prayer, I suppose. However I wish on stars far more often than I've ever prayed.

From this little rhyme:

Star light, star bright - First star I see tonight - I wish I may, I wish I might - Have the wish I wish tonight.

Then make a wish!

there is no reason, people used to believe that the stars were ways for god to look down at you and if you wished he would see and hear you

It sparkles like a candle on a birthday cake...that's why we also wish for something when we blow out our birthday cake...
It's fun, magical and adventurous...
Sometimes wishes come true, sometimes not. But no matter what...it's always fun making a wish!

I don't know what to tell you. I work w/children full-time & I'd probably just tell them b/c people always have.

The sarcasm in me wants to say b/c of the song Jiminy Cricket sang about in Pinocchio.
