Start with Biochemistry or something.... and get some counseling from your high school/college advisor in that field. My dad was a Biochemist, and he worked in labs related to the above things. I think genetics is a specialized field though. And plan on getting a PhD.

The area of the study is biochemistry and/or genetics.
To begin with the basics: General chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, etc. It seems we need to learn a lot, but in truth we know so little.
There are plenty of information about colleges and college major; however, a general premed-med program would have a lot of necessary courses.
When I studied/research this topic, it was called medical physics. but because the field spans many programs you many find other names like comparative biochemistry.
University have colleges, so the exact field you wish to pursue can be found in medicine, public health, biochemistry, etc. Start with the graduates school and work your way to the undergraduate.

Pre med, Biochem, organic chem, chem. Or take physics heavy on the chem and take a lot of additional bio classes. and English lol! Seriously, if you are entering college misspelling words is no longer cute, even in your casual time - it's a bad habit! See where the good profs are. Don't worry you'll have a freshman adviser, and you have plenty of time. You can even double major and minor.

Be a BIO Major and speak with your Advisor. It's that simple. You'll get plenty of answers and see all the classes you'll have to take (cell biology, genetics, bio 1, 2, 3, etc.)
