tap water is fine, but it needs to be conditioned with a dechlorinating solution like "aqua safe", and also you might want to add some beneficial bacteria like "eco start" to help digest the wastes that goldfish produce. 10 gallon is the minimum tank size for a gold fish, and an aeration system is recommended. Goldfish can live for quite a long time if taken care of properly. Be sure to change the carbon filter every month, and do a 25-30 percent water exchange every 2 weeks, be sure to condition the new water before adding it to the tank.

you can let the plastic bag float on the tank or bowl first to match the water temperature. This will minimize the shock fishes get when transfering.
also you need to treat the water for chlorine first using a chlorine remover, wait an hour then put in the fish.

but if you aren't really planning to have the fish around too long, tap water will do fine. Probably last a month :). Just change water weekly.

GOLDFISH CANNOT LIVE IN BOWLS
Goldfish require 10 gallons PER baby/juvenile fancy goldfish(fantails, orandas, black moors ect), 20 gallons PER long bodied goldfish (comet, common, shubunkin)

The water needs to be treated with a water conditioner that removes chlorine , chloramines, and neutralizes heavy metals. Start Right is a good brand that can be found at most petstores and even walmart.
Goldfish require freshwater that is highly filtered. The temp needs to be between 67-72 degrees F.

By the way, the use of living creatures (goldfish and lizards) as prizes is a cruel practice and needs to boycotted.

I bought 5 goldfish for christmas. I used tap water. I also added a chemical called start right. It makes the water immediately safe for your fish. I had a goldfish that did live for 6 years. They can live for up to 10 years if you take care of them right.

Yes, tap is OK.... if you don't have a filter system, change the water every 3-4 days. Inexpensive small Aquariums are available at Pet Stores, so are rocks and plants.

Use tap water, but try to let it sit over night 1st. The chlorine and chemicals they put in the water may not be good for the fish.

Only if you distill it. This means let it stand for a few days to allow sediments, lime and other impurities to either evaporate or settle. Then DO NOT shake it back up before you pour it in the tank.
You should use store bought distilled water.

Tape water is ok...but you might want to put a conditioner in it that is for goldfish, it willbalance the water out so they won't die or get sick.
