One of my best friends has been having alot of seizures lately and the doctor told her today that she has been having the grandma ones? Can somebody shed some light on these kind of seizures like what are some of the symptoms and what if anything can be done for these? I really want to help her but I feel helpless and feel like just balling when she has one of those seizures. Anybody at all if possible?

Actually it is Grand Mal seizure. It is a very serious thing. Go to www.webmd.com and enter Grand Mal and read the information there.

It is a great gag joke. A grandma seizure...you mean a grand mal seizure. It means a very bad seizure, instead of a slight or little one. They are very serious and her doctors should be able to help her and you can learn a lot about seizures on the Internet. She may have epilepsy.

Actually I hope you are just kidding and it is a joke. Seizures and epilepsy are not laughing matters.

If true, good luck and hopefully she will get medication to help her.

Well I will learn how to spell it and you all can have it ok ......I had to write this in lol, no matter how you spell it we get it.....
My child and other family members have these, I now have the little ones.
When my son has them he goes into convulsions. His muscles go hard and he thrashes all over. It is scary when seeing this and even more so when having one, I grew out of these thank god!
What one can do for a friend who is having one, or a family member, is STAY CALM, get the person on there side. This is so when and if they throw up they wont choke. Call 911 if you can, if not find someone else who can.
What would be really good for you to do is find a class to go to. The class might even be free?
These are real serious and only wish I had a friend like you! Many people with seizures feel alone. People do not stick around someone who has seizures, and the medication (in my experience) makes one moody, even weird. Strangers who do not realize what is going on can be VERY cruel in public when one is on the medication. When in middle school my parents were even called because the school thought I was on drugs, well du!
A grandmal is very tiring. My son sleeps a lot. Sleep is very important. He can not walk far. Stress brings on break threws (sp) (he is on a drug called Carbatrol, which if I remember is a form of Tegretol, his first medication at age 3). He does not travel well at all. They are different for different peeps (to my understanding doctors do not even no exactly why they happen). My way of seeing seizures is like a car or house who's electrical system is all mest up. My experience with doctors have not been the best, I am sure her doctors will have more people skills then the ones I have dealt with (or maybe it is me who need more faith in doctors? Got sick of being a guinea pig).
I hope for your friend that she gets hers under control. Some peeps are born with it, some get them after a accident, some get them from having high fevers as kids.
Some grow out of them, some like me turn into the small petimal seizures.
It is real cool that you are such a good friend to her! She will need good friends. She has a lot of doctors and tests to go through and first times for these tests are a little scary.
Find out about the class, there must be one? I can only talk out of experience. I never had official schooling on it.
Some great peeps in history has had seizures, Vincent van Gogh was one who was supposed to go into bought of fits (seizures are relatively new, 40's I believe is when they finally found drugs for it), there are others I looked them up for my son after he got jumped one day and beat up for being weird. Made him feel better, he is now ten and has other medical problems.....Hope I helped?

They are actually called GRAND MAL seizures. There are a number of causes and treatments.

Seizure disorders can usually be controlled with medications.

The following site does have some good resources:

Hi, I am a doctor.. Well, seizures do occur due to lack of oxygern to the brain.. this can cause small areas of necrosis of the brain.. Necrosis means areas that have died..the amount of brain invoved depends on the time she lacked oxygen to the brain.. A CT scan may be able to tell about how much may have been affected.thedoctors may have done this on your grandma... It is actually hard to tell from this description alone about her condidtion.. It depends on the CT or MRI findings if any of them have been done..it must have been done already.. Whats the breathing machine you mentioned?was it an inhaler? Feel free to write to me for more information..

Elderly people tend to get them
