i think they already are, its called increasing web traffic and keeping visitors on their site which increases the advertising revenue.

knowledge sharing ..is biggest of al...ever thought wikipedia.org ..its doing well...but not earning..as jusdt need to maintain the database.. as editors for this ..answers site is users.. only..
online advertising...and RSS feeds are great for traffic flow.. which surely invite more advertisers...
