No, it's not email that is limited to a company's network. It's just the email system hosted by google, like Yahoo's mail and Microsoft's Hotmail.
Gmail changes the game a bit by displaying emails in a "thread" fashion. So instead of having say 100 emails sitting in your inbox, it will group them into threads based on replies. So you might see only 50 or 60 threads instead. If I sent an email out and got like 10 replies, for example, I'd only see one thread that I can click on to see all the replies sorted.
It's kinda nice and saves space. Plus, they give you well over 2GB of space that grows everyday on its own. Another good thing about it is the built-in Spam filter. I get about 30-40 spam emails per week, but usually all but one or two end up in the Spam box. If you're careful about where you give out your email address, you can easily make it months without getting one spam email.

Google E-mail. They revolutionized free e-mail accounts by giving their users well over a gig of space to store information (in e-mail attachments) while other services only offered up to ten megabites of space without an enhanced service.
Unfortunatly the only way to join is to be invited by someone who is already a member.
