It's nearly time to rewrite the textbooks. We soon may have 12 planets in our solar system.

The world's astronomers are on the brink of adding three celestial bodies to the planetary roster.

They are: Charon, previously thought to be a moon of Pluto; Ceres, previously considered an asteroid; and a distant object so recently discovered that it still carries the provisional name of 2003 UB313.

The recommendation by a special committee of astronomers, if approved as expected by the International Astronomical Union next week, brings good news to fans of plucky little Pluto, which was in danger of being demoted.

Instead, Pluto will maintain its status as a planet while also becoming the prototype of a new subcategory of planets called ``plutons.''

So, students and science fans, here is your likely new lineup of planets, beginning with the closest to the sun:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres (pronounced SEER-eez), Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Charon (pronounced KAIR-en or SHAIR-en) and 2003 UB313.

''This is rather exciting,'' said Jack Horkheimer, director of the Space Transit Planetarium at the Miami Science Museum. ``Science is never static. We're always learning new information.''

And scientists always must be flexible, as Horkheimer learned again Tuesday.

His new book will be released next month. It states, quite definitively, that our solar system contains nine planets.

''I have to call my publisher,'' Horkheimer said after learning of the astronomers' recommendation. ``My book is already out of date before the damn thing hits the stands.''

As I understood it, if they are round, then they can be considered planets. I also heard if they "wobble", then they are considered planets. We are going to ultimately wind up with many planets, maybe up to 25 or more.

They have known about one that is very far out and consider it to be at the time of the "Big Bang", but little has been said about it. The name used to be 2003UB313, but is now called Xena. This planet is 435 miles larger than Pluto, and very old. It is so far out, like 9 billion miles in the universe. It was called the "Tenth" planet. I understand that Pluto is considered a planet, so it is not going to get bumped. We are just going to ultimately recognize more and more planets with the new definition of planets. The moon may be considered one as well, if it lasts a long time, so they say. I have always been fascinated with (new name) Xena, and about time it is being called a planet. This planet is very huge, dark and icy too, and could be the oldest planet that we know in the universe, I think.

From what I saw on Good Morning America this week, one is the largest asteroid in the asteroid belt, Ceres, which used to be considered a planet a couple hundred years ago. Another is Pluto's moon (forget the name). The third is Xena (yes, named after the warrior princess), discovered last year, far beyond Pluto.

Three new planets were not discovered.
Three celestial bodies that we've known about for years may end up getting "planet" status.

One of the "planets" is Charon, Pluto's moon.
I believe another is an asteroid, and the third is another moon.
(Correct me if I'm wrong here.)

yeah, its all a BIG $ SCAM for those NASA morons. Also they are trying to get deals to on revising MILLIONS of books, ENCYCLOPEDIAS, etc.. just for the $. There are probably hundred if not thousands of more planets in the solar system. The scam is to re-update everything so Bush, the dingbat, can cash in along with those inept pricks in congress

first of all none of them are considered planets. charon is a moon and xena and sedna are too far into the solar system to be called planets, they are called somethingbelt I think it is cyberbelt objects. and for the info go on yahoo.
