Try Otrivin, it works really well and it's totally safe - it's a nasal spray. Cold remedies tend to dry up all your bodily fluids so not good for breastfeeding.

My doctor let me take Sudafed while pregnant and breastfeeding. I would also get a steam humidifier (not the cool air one--you need some steam to loosen up the mucus). You can even get some eucalyptus oil to put in the humidifier to help. If you don't have a steam humidifier, just get in the bathroom, run the shower as hot as you can stand it, and stand outside the stream of water. You don't want to be IN the water, because the heat will stimulate your breasts and you may let down. You could also try an over the counter nasal spray (like Afrin) but only use that for a day or 2, it's very easy to get rebound congestion from those. Good luck and I hope you get to feeling better!

I agree with the other answers--ask the pharmacist or your doctor, but also, as far as your stuffy nose, you can get saline nasal spray from the drug store and it will help with your nose and it can't possibly hurt the baby. I think it works better than the regulat nasal sprays, cos it doesn't make you MORE stuffy once it wears off. Also, fill your bathroom sink with really hot water, and cover your head with a towel and breath in the steam until it loosens the congestion and you can blow your nose. Even if you think you can't breathe through your nose, somehow that helps.
Feel better--colds usually don't last more than a week.

it's difficult enough to breastfeed and take care of your family at the same time, but to be sick on top of it..... I'm so sorry dearie
If you are that severe, I would say any over the counter medication is warranted, but you probably should take some professional advice from your pharmacist or nursing hot line if you are worried about the medicinal compound of medicines. (we have a nursing hot line in Canada that we can call for free - if you are in the US I hope there is something like this available for you). Or try contacting your local LaLeche league chapter, they should have some ideas. Poor thing if you are coughing etc, your baby will likely catch it eventually too - keep clean of course, rest, drink lots. Blessings to you :)

I'm not positive but I think I took Sudaphed while nursing my older daughter. I would call the pharmacy and ask them, they will know for sure. Or you could check the La Leche League website.
