I think a lot would depend on the situation when "you" killed him. Was he beating the crap out of you at the time and "you" killed him in self-defense? Was he sleeping in bed and "you" stabbed or shot him.
What sort of reputation does he have in the community? Is he know as a really great guy? Or is he known as an abusive, violent SOB? Does he have an arrest record, if so what for?
Then there are the lawyers and the media. Was it as slow crime day in Medialand? Did they make a big to-do over the case. Is the proscuting lawyer looking to make a name for himself. Do "you" have a good lawyer or a public defender with WAY too many cases on his/her hands?
Then there are the judge and jury. Is the judge leinent and will allow the lawyers to go off on tangents or is he a strict judge "Just the facts please!" And how the jury is made up. I think that I read somewhere that, surpisingly enough, women jurors are harder on women defendants then men are.
Then there is wether "you" are charged with Murder or Manslaugher.
Lots and lots of factors to look at.
Basically, it all depends...
BTW, if "you" are planning on killing an abusive husband/boyfriend...don't do it. Getting out of the house and into a shelter is easier and cheaper and won't cost "you" a long portion of your life that "you" could be using to better "yourself."

You can find an attorney that will get ya divorce for 500 dollars, w/o property division. If spouse doesn't want no contest divorce, go to Vegas, get one yourself and worry bout dividing the stuff later.

That depends on the sentencing rules in the state the crime was committed. It also varies with the offense with which you are charged. If it justifiable homicide you might not get any time. If it is premeditated unjustifiable homicide you might get the death penalty.

I guess it would depend on the state and the particular judge/jury. Plus the circumstances, mental ability and premeditation.

If you can prove in court that it was self-defence, you might not go to jail. If not, your screwed for life.
Either way, you wanna take that chance?
