the brand SanDisk makes an MP3 player called a 'sansa'. They look really like IPods. These come in 2GB (about 480 MP3 songs), 4GB (about 960 MP3 songs), and 6GB (about 1440 MP3 songs). They work really well. ITunes, unfortunately, doesn't work for these type of Mp3 players. But another music source, called Rhapsody, is really cool. For about $15 per month you can put as many songs from Rhapsody on your mp3 player as you want. The only catch is that you can't burn the songs you didn't buy on a CD. (that would be illegal). You mentioned that you wanted to play videos on there too- which this MP3 player is completely capable of doing. It also stores pictures.
The 'Sansa's are also a lot cheaper than IPods. The Retail price for a 2GB is about $180. The 4GB is $230, and the 6GB is $280.
Although on sites like EBay, you could get these for a whole lot less.
hope this helps!

I have the Creative Zen Vision: M -- I love it!
Reasons to go for the ZV:M over the 30gb Video iPod.
[1] Better Sound Quality (slightly) - Most magazine reviews put the quality as a bit better than the Apple.
[2] Batteries - Apples have a bad history with their batteries, no one has yet found fault with a ZV:M.
[3] Plays more audio formats
[4] Plays more video formats (DIVX, etc)
[5] Better Screen
[6] You can copy your files OFF again
Reasons to go with the iPOD over the ZV:M
[1] Size - Much, much thinner
[2] Looks - Much, much sexier
[3] Cool click wheel thingie
[4] Links with iTunes
[5] err....
[6] That's it!
I have 3 MP3 players, my old MUVO2 (4 gigs, tiny in size -- Now used exclusively as a portable HDD), an old 3rd gen 40gb iPod (used as my home Hi-FI) and my ZV:M, which I take with me everywhere.
Truthfully, I wish my ZV:M were a bit thinner. I hope Creative do something about that with the rumoured ZV:M 60 gig model, if so I'll be upgrading straight away.

iPod video:
30 GB $299
60 GB $399
iPod video U2 Special Edition:
30 GB $329
iPod nano:
1 GB $149
2 GB $199
4 GB $249
iPod shuffle:
512 MB $69
1 GB (1024 MB) $99
I don't think you should get an iPod.
If you are planning to get iPod nano, and have a PC, I recommend you get the Creative Zen V Plus. (Not Zen V) It has fm radio, fm radio recorder, voice recorder, and video playback. It costs the same, but supports more file formats.
If you are planning to get iPod video, and have a Windows XP Home/Pro/Media Center Edition, I recommend you purchase the Toshiba Gigabeat S. CNET says its a greater value. It has better navigation, sexier look, nice interface, nice screen, etc. It has My TV (good if you have MCE), My Radio, My Music, My Videos, and My Pictures. It costs the same as the iPod video, but has a lot of features, and supports more file formats than the iPod. It also takes subscription services like URGE music $14.95/month and Vongo movies $9.99/month, if you're into legal downloading.
If you wanted a shuffle, save some money to get a Zen V Plus because Flash MP3 Players are stupid. But if you really want a Flash MP3 Player, get a Dell DJ Ditty. It costs the same as the iPod but supports the important WMA and WMA DRM format.

The Creative Zen M was rated #1 MP3 for 2006. I have a creative MP3 (an older one) and it is great. The new ones are really nice. They hold more songs, pictures, and videos for the same gb as an ipod. Creative also makes the best sound cards (for pc's) so you know the sound will be great. go to www.creative.com and check them out. They are better and cheaper. The battery, at least in mine, can be taken out. That way if the battery dies you do not need a whole new player. Ipod does not have this feature.

IPOD's lead the industry for shear size and performance. I have a Sansdisk MP3 player that plays video, but it only has a 2GB storage capacity, so you won't be fitting much on that. It is reasonably affordable(under $150). The display is also much smaller than a IPOD's. If your primary focus is on viewing vid's, shell out the money for an IPOD. It is worth the money.

Any thing but! IPODS suck! You cant transfer tunes to other users pcs unless you install the software nor can you transfer their tunes to your Ipod, You cant use an Ipod on anything older than windows 2k! This is exactly why Apple fails as a competitor in the computer market! Get a Creative labs player! I love it! I can take it anywhere anytime and upload or download music without all the troubles!

Well the best value for your money would be a Creative, and I really liked the Zen Xtra. It comes in 30, 40 and 60 GB but it doesn't play videos. I think Creative does have some video playing MP3 players but I have yet to run across them.

Well I have had a few different MP3 players and none have been as great as my ipod. I have had a 40 gig for three years. I just received a 30 gig video for a gift. Ipod is the easiest to use and maintain the play list. They are expensive but worth it.

An MP3 player. They are smaller than most iPods and can hold about 250 to 500 songs. There are some more sophisticated ones that can download pictures and videos. Go to Best Buy, Comp USA or and number of electronic stores to check them out. Hope this helps

there are many great alternatives to the ipod, its just that apple markets the ipod so much you really don't hear about the other players.try the Creative Vision:m it has a gorgous 265000 colour screen compared to the 65000 colour screen of the ipod.It has great battery life 4.5 hours for video compared to the ipod which is only 1.5 hours. The vision m also support 8 video formats compared to 2 for the ipod. The creative vision m also has amazing audio quality (siginal to noise ratio of 97 DB) ipods only have 79 Db.Anything below 90 DB in the mp3 player market is sub standard.the vision will run with a variety of programs such as windows media player, media monkey but ipods can only use itunes which has alot of problems. Also with ipods you cannot use other music subscription services such as napster or rhapsody which give you a better deal on music
