its underwear that goes up your butt crack. they are actually comfortable tho. i wear them all the time except on my period, because they are comfortable and you cant see panty lines.
also, flip flops are also called thongs.

Thongs can be worn whey a woman is wearing low-waisted jeans. The elastic from the thong that shows is very sexy. Looks a heck of a lot better than seeing someone's underwear sticking out.

Thongs are either flip flops that go in between your toes or they are women or mens underwear that pretty much go right through your butt cheeks.
Flip flops are worn during the summer or to the beach.
Underwear are worn all the time underneath clothes and thongs in general are worn to be sexy or prevent lines showing through your pants.

It's undergarments that looks like tooth floss. It's really gross and unhygenic and not to mention uncomfortable. There really is no occasion fit for wearing a thong. If you still don't understand what it is then do an google image search on 'thong'.

Thongs are tight in your butt underwear...It's best to wear them when your wearing something really tight and you don't want your pantie line to show....or for your partner..they really think it's sexy..
