the motherboard is the board inside your case that everything plugs into...like the hard drive, the optical drives ,vga card etc..also the CPU (which is the brain of the computer)

If you are building a computer, the main circuit board is the motherboard. Every other part of the computer plugs into the motherboard. The different types of motherboards are defined by what type of processor it is designed to work with. A pentium 4 processor will not work on a motherboard that is made for an athlon 64 processor. Also, some motherboards will have more slots to plug in more drives, expansion cards, and memory than others. Also, some are built with more performance because they use a faster chip set.
You only need to understand 3 things when buying a motherboard: what kind of processor it takes, what kind of RAM it takes, and what are the reliable brands. Asus is the best, and Gigabit and Abit are also good.

The motherboard is a circuit board that is the main frame of your pc. It is the single most important pice of hardware in the case. More important than the processor or the memory.
You have a few basic types, called form factors of motherboards. You have the ATX form factor, which is large. It typically has the most room for add ons. Really beginning to be outmoded since miniaturization is much better than it once was. Then there is Mid-Atx... these are smaller than atx, and have fewer slots for expansion, but are generally the most upgradeable, since they are the most abundant. Finally, there is mini-atx. They're found in small package machines like hp hsc5000 and compaq deskpro. They are generally the least upgradeable
All motherboards do the same job. All Hard Drives, CD and DVD drives, memory, pci cards, sound cards, video/display adapters, etc. are all able to communicate thanks to this panel.
Some important things to look for when choosing a motherboard: Socket type... generally, I think socket LGA 775 is the wave of the future. That means that it will only handle a socket 775 processor. Whichever socket you get, make sure that the speed of the processors are at least being made at 3.2 Gigs right now, even if you don't get one that fast. That way you can get a faster one in the future if you so choose. Number of DIMM (memory) slots... this determines how many sticks of memory you can add... the more the merrier. Is it sATA compatable? sATA is the new type of connection for hard drives and DVD drives. You can link 16 different drives on one connection, as opposed to 2 on the IDE cables. .Front side bus speed: this determines how fast information is channeled through the processor to your hard drive... in otherwords, the higher the front side bus, the faster your programs will work. Does it have onboard Video, or do you need a card? From there, it's all pretty petty. Tiger Direct has a formidable selection of motherboards and a great descripton for each, if you're into research.

If you can see inside your computer the motherboard (mobo) is the biggest piece. It is a big printed circuit board (PCB) Everything else, like your CPU (processor), chipset, memory (RAM), drive cables etc., attaches to it. The chipset on the mobo determines what other hardware is required and what functions your mobo will have. The CPU socket (there are many layouts) will be compatible with the chipset, so that an AMD CPU cannot be installed on a mobo designed for an Intel CPU. There are also different socket designs within each maker's product line, like socket 478 or LGA 775 for Intel and socket 939 or the new AM2 for AMD. Each socket type will only handle a certain kind of processor.
This should help explain why there are so many types of mobos.
AMD will be designing all their new CPUs for the new AM2 socket, so some of the confusion will disappear when that happens.

The "motherboard" is the main circuit board in your computer. It has the CPU socket (again, many types) and numerous other components on it (BIOS chip, clock, battery, memory, etc....) With the exception of the drives and housing, it's pretty much the whole enchilada. So many kinds due to evolution, advancing technology, intended use, CPU type, case design, and so forth.

A motherboard is just a circuit board that is in every single computer. The motherboard generally isn't of concern when buying a computer unless you were making your own computer, in which case you'd know what a motherboard is.

Motherboard, a single circuit board, provides the path through which let the processor communicates with memory components peripheral devices.
Actually motherboard is not the "Brain", but the PC'c central nervous system.

A motherboard, to put it simply, is just a board relay system for all of your components in your system. Almost every piece of electronics has a motherboard. It is in fact the mother board. It's the controlling board of all of your other boards and components. It relays information and allows cooperation between system objects such as hard drives and processors. It is little more than a mother control device that takes care of routing your information to proper channels.
