Independents don't HAVE a platform - that's why they are independent. You'll find independents who vote enthusiastically for Bush and others who vote enthusiastically for Anyone But Bush.
Independents are such because they each hue to a set of issues and values that are not unifomly embraced by either party. In other words, the dominant schisms and cleaves of the political culture are on neither the right nor the left of one who is an independent - rather, an independent is likely to have solid beliefs that cut across the dominant cleave.
By the way, your question is skewed and biased. Democrats are for family values as much as any Republican is, and there are many, many Republicans who support gay rights. Further, it's interesting that you cast Republicans as being for "lower taxes and fair taxation for all income groups", when that is demonstrably not true. And what's this about Democrats being "for" welfare? What the heck does THAT mean?

Republicans and smaller government do not go together.
Over the last 5 years more and more liberties are being taken away from the American people.More restrictions are being proposed every week in a Republican Senate.
I am neither a Democrat , Republican nor an Independent.
I believe in a free country where Government is like a cool uncle instead of being like a mean old Grandfather.

I'm a Democrat, ONLY because I wanted to vote in primaries and usually prefer candidates from the left.
But for a long time I was an Independent, because both parties disgust me with their tendency to polarize the voters. It's left, or it's right. Excuse me, but most of life is more complex than that.
An Independent stands for the truth inside themselves, and says "my truth does not easily fit the planks of either party."

I'm basically a Libertarian, I guess.
I believe that individuals should be free to do whatever they wish with their person or property, as long as they do not infringe on the same liberty of others.
Libertarians agree with conservatives about freedom in economic matters, so we're in favor of lowering taxes, slashing bureaucratic regulation of business, and charitable -- rather than government -- welfare. But Libertarians also agree with liberals on personal tolerance, so we're in favor of people’s right to choose their own personal habits and lifestyles.
